SCANDAL SHEET

The Friends of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection, the Toronto Public Library and the Bootmakers of Toronto will be co-hosting a conference October 13-16, 2011 at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street, Toronto.

Entitled Arthur Conan Doyle: A Study in Scandal (SinS), it will examine the many controversies in which ACD became embroiled both during his lifetime and after his death, and possibly lay to rest some of the accusations, rumours and innuendo which have dogged him and sullied his reputation for over a century.

We will also examine the subject of scandal in the Canon, which drives a number of the plots and determines the fate of many of its characters.

And finally, we will attempt to sort out the issue of scandal as a force in Victorian and Edwardian culture, its nature and its consequences, to determine why it became such an important theme in the sensational literature and theatre of its day, as well as in Conan Doyle's writing.

In addition to an impressive roster of speakers, the conference will include a ghost tour of Old Toronto and a séance which Conan Doyle himself would have been delighted to attend – and possibly may.

Further details, including registration information, will be posted on this site as they become available.
